Pronatura and GoChain announced that they will join forces to develop a pilot project based on Blockchain technology for marine conservation and sustainable fisheries.
Pronatura Noroeste AC, the northwest representation of Mexico’s largest and oldest environmental organization, and GoChain, a world leader in blockchain solutions for businesses and governments, announced that they will work together to develop a pilot project that seeks Pronatura’s marine conservation and sustainable fisheries, which would be based on Blockchain technology.
Through a press release from GoChain, he specified that they want to leverage blockchain technology and other technological solutions in support of Pronatura Northwest’s marine conservation and sustainability.
The two companies will initially work together on a twelve-month pilot project in coordination with two cooperatives on the west coast of Baja California, Litoral de Baja California and Eripac, and their Red Lobster and Sea Urchin Fishery Improvement Projects (FIP).
The objective of this pilot project consists of three basic principles. The first, to evaluate the value and benefits of blockchain technology for granular tracking and tracing purposes and remote auditing in relation to existing solutions.
The second aims to help fishermen accelerate the timetable for achieving sustainability certification on a cost-effective and highly subsidised basis.
And finally, to empower and improve the livelihoods of local fishers and potentially provide new market entry opportunities.
Projects to improve the fishing process
For each of these fisheries improvement projects, Pronatura Noroeste along with the participating fishing cooperatives will work with GoChain to take advantage of their blockchain tracking and tracing system. The aim is to assist fishermen with their tracking and tracing needs.
However, qualified fishers will be incorporated through GoChain’s Global Acceleration Program for Sustainability (GAPS) initiative, which GoChain recently launched 1k Daily Profit to support non-certified small-scale producers and harvesters worldwide with their sustainability and certification requirements.
Pronatura, Mexico’s oldest conservation organization
Each project they carry out has common conservation goals and objectives throughout northwest Mexico, to achieve sustainability in the region and preserve its natural capital.
They link nature conservation with community development, carrying out fundamental tasks such as: restoration and conservation of ecosystems, marine surveillance, improvement of fisheries, governance in natural protected areas, environmental education and protection of endangered species.
Likewise, they carry out their work in the ecoregions of the Baja California peninsula, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, the western slopes of Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco and Colima, the Gulf of California and its islands, and Mexico’s exclusive economic zone in the Pacific Ocean, corresponding to the aforementioned coastal states.
GoChain and the Blockchain
GoChain’s blockchain protocol in conjunction with GoTrace software allows every step from source to consumer to be recorded in a distributed and unchangeable ledger. This results in a transparent and secure seafood history that consumers, regulators and other stakeholders can trust. Margins for fishing are improved.
Consumers trust what they eat and establish relationships with trusted brands. Regulators can crack down on fraud.
Pending the progress and outcome of the initial pilot, GoChain and Pronatura Noroeste anticipate identifying additional initiatives and opportunities to leverage GoChain’s GoTrace system with other Pronatura Noroeste fisheries conservation and sustainability programs throughout Mexico.
